COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Columbus answered the call to give Hope to Haiti by raising $142,591.11 through generous donations made from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Ohio Historical Society.
And, there’s more. Columbus-based Wendy’s will be donating more money to Hope for Haiti. The single-day fundraiser is the product of joint efforts among local TV, radio and print media in Central Ohio, as well as leading figures in the Columbus community.
"You have to feel for the people down there right now. As hard as things are there," one donor said.
"I think we're very fortunate to be in a country that is able to do this," said another donor.
Donation totals written on a tally board continued to rise by leaps and bounds throughout the day as people from all walks of life drove up to donation drop-off points in the parking lot of the OHS to help make a difference.
Members of Hope for Haiti greeted the smiling faces of people who donated their money to help get more relief supplies to the men, women and children who survived the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that leveled much of Haiti. Many have lost loved ones and their homes, being left without clean water, electricity, a means of communication and more.
The money raised by Hope for Haiti will join the American Red Cross’ relief effort.
Michael Carroll, of the Columbus chapter of the Red Cross, said, "The first priority is water, food and emergency medical attention. I read a story yesterday about Red Crossers who are literally doing first aid on street corners."
• If you would still like to donate, a link to the Red Cross Web site is posted on the ‘Haiti Relief’ page here. You can easily donate online.
