Civil Union Conversions In Champaign County

URBANA, IL - With the Illinois Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act taking effect on June 1, Champaign County Clerk Gordy Hulten today announced procedures for converting existing civil unions to marriages.
While same sex marriage licenses have been issued in Champaign County since February, important pieces of the law do not take effect until June 1, said Hulten. Among these is the legal process for converting an existing civil union to a marriage.
Couples in an existing civil union who wish to convert to a marriage may do so beginning June 1, 2014.  Couples may visit the office of Champaign County Clerk Gordy Hulten, complete an application, and provide proof of identity and their existing civil union. There is no fee for conversion from June 1, 2014 through May 31, 2015, no one-day waiting period or ceremony is required, and their marriage will be effective from the date of their original civil union.
Champaign County has recorded 206 Civil Union licenses since June 1, 2011.
