3 Pit Bulls Euthanized After Girl's Mauling Death

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) -- Officials in central Illinois have euthanized three dogs involved in a 4-year-old girl's death.

McLean County Animal Control euthanized two male pit bulls and one female pit bull. The girl, Kara Hartrich of Bloomington, died Jan. 17 at a Normal hospital shortly after the attack.

McLean County Health Department spokeswoman Kera Brossette says the animals were euthanized after a state-mandated 10-day observation period. Brossette says the animals' owners voluntarily released ownership rights. She says "given the severity of the circumstances the dogs did not meet the guidelines to be adopted."

The coroner has said preliminary information suggested the girl was home with a younger sibling and grandparent when the dogs mauled her.

McLean County State's Attorney Jason Chambers says no charges would be filed.
