County Highway Negotiations Stall

VERMILION COUNTY -- Negotiations are at a standstill between highway workers and Vermilion County.

The employees are represented by the Teamsters and have been working without a new contract for nearly a year.

County officials say they sent two contract offers to union membership but both were voted down.

The parties enlisted the help of a federal mediator but one of the lead negotiators for the county says both the union and the county are trying to figure out if they will continue to use the mediator's help.

The county wants to create a contract similar to other county employee deals.

County Negotiator Bill Donahue says, "We've been offering them a contract with some raises and they have a different point of few on the degree of raises and believe that they're being short changed.  We view our raises as consistent with other groups."

He did not want to add much more as negotiations are still in progress.

A representative from the Teamsters declined a comment for the same reason.

The County Highway Department covers one-hundred and fifty-seven miles of road and is primarily tasked with maintenance of the roads.
