U of I Student Murdered, Ex-Boyfriend in Custody

A University of Illinois Student is dead, and her ex-boyfriend is under arrest.

The violence took place shortly before noon, when police were called to an apartment complex in Urbana.

Police said the suspect in custody is a 29-year-old university student. The victim is his 25-year-old ex-girlfriend.

It all unfolded before 11 a.m. today in the 1300-block of North Lincoln in Urbana.

Authorities said the victim's roommate was somehow tied up inside the apartment building during the killing. She was able to break free and found police in a nearby courtyard.

Police said the suspect is 29-year-old Yongfei Ci.

We found a next-door neighbor of the victim, who said she can't believe what happened.

"It definitely makes you think about what's going on," neighbor Megan Lindsey said. "I've never felt unsafe. We have firemen that live in the house next door. I have pepper spray I keep with me when I'm walking in. But besides that, I've never felt unsafe."

This afternoon, university police issued an Illini Alert to students and faculty, asking for information on the suspect. Urbana police arrested him shortly afterward.

Right now, we don't have a cause of death. There's still a lot of investigating to be done in this case.
