Celebrating Summer in Danville

DANVILLE-- Hundreds of people gathered in Temple Plaza in downtown Danville Friday for a summer kick-off party that included food, drinks, and a concert. Dana Schaumburg, Executive Director of Downtown Danville, Incorporated, says, "It's become quite the social event. People get out here at about 4:00 to start setting up their lawnchairs and picking their spot. At 5:00 we have food and drinks ready for sale and the band kicks off from 6 to 9 and it's free." A classic car show completed the festival-like atmosphere, which is part of a summer-long series of events.

For many, the Memorial Day weekend is a chance to relax and enjoy the first days of summer. For others, it means a little more, a chance to thank those who've given so much. Judy Moreman, President of the Danville American Legion Women's Auxiliary, says, "For serving the country, and making this a free, free country. There are just so many things they have done for us, and we're trying to give it back to them."

The Danville American Legion collects donations at intersections and outside stores throughout Danville. As a thank you they pass out symbolic red poppy flowers. Moreman says, "We're trying to raise money for our veterans out in Danville, Illinois. All the money we get goes to them."

Moreman says a few years ago the American Legion raised about $500. This year she expects to raise several thousand dollars in just two days. Dana Schaumburg isn't surprised by the giving attitude of her community. "Danville is a great community of people who want to help out and help each other. This event is put on mostly by volunteers. And without the Danville AMBUCs and their crew we couldn't do it. It's a great partnership."
