WICD ABC NewsChannel 15 :: News - Top Stories - IHSA Against a Proposed Senate Bill
ILLINOIS--A proposed Senate bill is causing quite the controversy for Illinois high school football teams.

The idea for this bill came about last year when a football player, at Paxton-Buckley-Loda High School, was denied the chance to play in a football game.

The student missed practices while participating in basic training for the U.S. Military.

Illinois Senate Bill 2550 was filed by 53rd District State Senator Shane Cultra.

This bill would allow local school boards to provide a waiver for a student-athlete, who is also part of the military, to participate in a high school football game.

Despite the Illinois High School Association's standard of attending 12 practices prior to the game.

Senator Cultra said, he doesn't find it fair that people who serve our country, are punished for missing football practice.

However, PBL High School officials said, it's not about being unpatriotic, it's about the safety of their students.

The bill has been sent to the education committee, and they'll take the next couple of weeks to come up with a decision on whether to send it to the Senate for a vote.
