For hours police surrounded the home and blocked off streets as they tried to
make contact with the suspect.Don Chenoweth says, "I think it's a bad situation."
He was one of the many people watching and waiting to see what would happen as law enforcement officials tried to figure out Danny West's location.
He says, "I feel bad for Danny and I feel bad for his mom and dad because his mom and dad are really good people."
Police say West broke into his parents home and then burglarized it. West had been living there with his family up until about two weeks ago. After several hours of trying to communicate with West the Coles County Crisis Response Team entered the home. They eventually found West hiding in the upper loft of his parent's machine shed next door.
Atwood Police Chief Rob Bross says,"When the response team entered they gave him basic instructions to pretty much surrender himself. He did comply with those demands and was apprehended without incident."
Police say West is being charged with unlawful use of a weapon and burglary.
Bross says, "The Crisis Response Team arrived and did a great job, I mean, that's our job, we go in there and hopefully get him out, no shots were fired, we aren't hurt, the citizens aren't hurt then it's a good day."
