URBANA-- Arthritis affects one in five adults and is the nation's leading cause of disability but some area people are fighting back against arthritis with a Chinese form of martial art known as Tai Chi.
Martha Alwes says, "I came to Tai Chi because I thought it was a gentle way to give me some exercise without putting stress on those joints that have a lot of arthritis."
This was her second time at the Tai Chi class. She has had both her knees replaced and suffers from arthritis throughout her body.
She says, "It was very relaxing. I know that it did something, that it worked, because I did feel muscles that have not worked in awhile."
There are many types of Tai Chi but the instructor says the Sun Style type of Tai Chi is good for people who have arthritis.
The certified Tai Chi Instructor says, "It's got a much more upright posture for movement and there's a lot of agile stepping in there. It offers some challenge but it's all very doable."
Another participant who also has had double knee replacement surgery says for her Tai Chi helps with stability and inner core strength.
Lois Vostral says, "The next morning I've got little muscles that I'm feeling that you would think you would only get with severe exertion doing something and here it is very calm, very quiet, moving slow and the next day yeah I feel it."
