the first African-American female being named to an appellate court. Her
name is Lisa Holder-White, and she becomes the newest member of the
appellate court for the state's 4th District. The Decatur judge was
sworn in this morning with a few family and friends looking on inside
the state Supreme Courthouse.
Holder-White understands she is breaking a threshold in the state's judicial system, but it's not something she's dwelling on.
"When
I think about that, I don't so much think about myself," she said. "I
think about the sacrifices made by people of all races so that this
opportunity could be here for me today. I feel a strong sense of pride
and also responsibility to do the very best that I can do and to be a
good example."
With the move from circuit court in Macon County
to the appellate court for the 4th District, Holder-White will be a
justice serving 30 central Illinois counties. She is filling the vacancy
created by the death of judge John McCullough last October. If
Holder-White wants to keep that seat, she'll need to be elected in 2014.
