Danville Mayor Scott Eisenhauer is confident the gaming bill will be revisited, if not at the veto session possibly the lame duck session during January. He says he believes it's likely during one of those meetings, lawmakers will come up with some sort of new language for the bill that will make it hard for the governor not to sign it.
"The state needs to figure out ways to generate revenue and this is a tax of choice. People who want to go to a gaming facility will do it on their own free will and are providing a tax on their own. That's difficult for the state legislatures to turn their backs on," said Eisenhauer.
If the gaming expansion bill is eventually signed in to law, it will bring five new casinos to Illinois, including one in Danville. Supporters say it would create one million dollars in revenue and create tens of thousands of jobs.
Governor Pat Quinn vetoed the bill back in august because of what he called the absence of strict ethical standards, including not enough oversight for casino operators. He said the legislation fell short of the standards of the people of Illinois
