For aldermen and alderwomen, the increase wouldn't mean as much as it would for higher paid elected officials. City council members make on average $6,100 dollars per year. Councilwoman Diane marlin says the increases are modest.
"We also have to look ahead that all employee contracts next year will be up for re-negotiation and I think elected officials have to set and example and we set the framework for discussions next year," said Marlin.
Back in September, the Champaign City Council rejected a panel's recommendation to increase member's salaries from $5,000 to $6,000 a year.
