IN THE NEWS: NEW STUDY DEALS WITH ONLINE HARASSMENT

NEW YORK (AP) -- It's something anyone who has ever read postings on a controversial subject already knows: the Internet can be a rough place. That reality is being confirmed by a study that shows harassment is a common part of online life. The report by the Pew Research Center finds that nearly three-quarters of American adults who use the Internet have seen online harassment. And 40 percent report having experienced it themselves. The kind of stuff the respondents were asked about include things like name calling, physical threats, sexual harassment and stalking. Half of those who were harassed said they even didn't know the person who had most recently attacked them.

IN THE NEWS: MAGIC JOHNSON TAKES ON HIGH-TECH DIVERSITY

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Magic Johnson is trying to get Silicon Valley to step up its game when it comes to diversity. The former NBA star says companies like Apple, Google and other high-tech firms need to hire more blacks and Latinos. Most of the workers in those fields these days are white and Asian. Johnson runs a company that he says can help put recruiters in touch with African-American and Hispanic engineers. Johnson spoke yesterday at an event sponsored by Intuit. The work force for Intuit -- which makes TurboTax and Quicken -- is only 4 percent black and 6 percent Latino. Nationally, 12 percent of the work force is black and 14 percent is Hispanic. The numbers at Google and Facebook are even worse.
