VEGAS STRIP-THRILL RIDE
LAS VEGAS (AP) -- If losing your shirt in Sin City isn't enough -- you could soon lose lunch. A Florida-based thrill ride developer wants federal approval, for a 650-foot-tall roller coaster on the Las Vegas Strip. Company president Michael Kitchen says the ride would be so tall, it needs an OK from federal aviation officials. He says it would be the tallest roller coaster in the world. Kitchen tells The Associated Press it's too early to talk publicly about the development plan. The application shows the tower at the Tropicana Las Vegas hotel-casino on the south end of the Strip.
KNIT THE BRIDGE
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- It's the biggest "yarn bombing" yet. A group called Knit the Bridge wants to cover the Andy Warhol Bridge in Pittsburgh. Yarn bombing is an art movement that covers things with knitted cloth. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports the Allegheny County Council is giving the OK to the huge bridge sweater. It would be the largest yard bombing project ever in the U.S. Knit the Bridge has more than 1,200 volunteers, many at the ready with their knitting needles. The knitted panels are to go up for about month beginning in early August.
TRAVELERS-MILITARY WIVES
CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) -- "Operation Shower" isn't your standard military mission. Forty pregnant military wives were hosted by the Travelers Championship golf tournament yesterday. The women's husbands are on deployment from the Navy's submarine base in Groton or the Connecticut Army National Guard. The party gave the moms-to-be a chance to swap stories and get some swag, too. Gift packages included baby clothes, crib bedding, bottles, diaper bags and toys.
DUCKS-SEAT CUSHIONS
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- The University of Oregon may soon be watching the fans' bottom lines. Some are complaining it's getting crowded in the bleachers. It seems jumbo seat cushions are taking up too much room. So, the school is proposing to limit cushions to 17 inches wide. There will be a hearing on the proposal next month. If adopted, the seat cushion limit would go into effect for the Ducks' fall football season.
