MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- It's a Festivus pole -- for the rest of us. A least at the Wisconsin Capitol. Along with a Christmas tree and various holiday displays there's a Festivus pole. Festivus was celebrated in a 1997 episode of "Seinfeld." It was a time to air grievances and participate in feats of strength. A sign on the pole promises the airing of grievances on December 23. But there won't be any feats of strength "due to liability issues."
BELL RINGING RECORD
COLTON, Calif. (AP) -- It's a ringing record -- three times over. Three Salvation Army bell ringers have set a new record with 105 consecutive hours of ringing each. Salvation Army Major "Butch" Soriano did his ringing outside of a Wal-Mart in the San Diego area. James Brickson of Albert Lea, Minnesota, and Andre Thompson of Tyler, Texas, matched him hour-for-hour. Soriano says his reward is the $2,700 he raised during the ringing marathon. The old record was 80 hours. The rules allowed each ringer a five-minute break every hour. Soriano tells UT San Diego he was a bit tired, but not as tired as he thought he would be.
BIKE RIDE THANK YOU
ATHENS, Ohio (AP) -- Brent Hayes has a unique way of thanking the doctor who saved his knee. The southwestern Ohio man rode his bike 1,100 miles to pay tribute to the surgeon who performed two risky operations. Dr. Dror Paley corrected a leg deformity caused by bone cancer early in life. Hayes decided to go ahead with the surgery, even though the doctor warned he could lose the leg. Hayes tells an Ohio newspaper (Athens Messenger) the marathon bike ride was the best way he could think of to thank the doctor.
DENVER (AP) -- Where to find child-resistant packaging suitable for pot? That's the problem facing Colorado's legal pot stores slated to open January 1. Regulations require that everything from buds to brownies be packed in opaque and child-resistant packages. Mike Elliott, director of the Medical Marijuana Industry Group, tells The Denver Post, some businesses are "having an incredibly difficult time" meeting the requirement. But state regulators aren't sympathetic. Officials note the pot retailers knew about the regs and shouldn't have waited until the last minute. Violators face possible fines and other sanctions.
